Understanding Technical Indicators

RSI (Relative Strength Index)

The RSI measures momentum on a 0-100 scale. Values above 70 indicate overbought conditions that may signal selling opportunities, while values below 30 indicate oversold conditions that may present buying opportunities. Traders use RSI to identify extreme price movements and potential reversals in trending markets.

MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence)

MACD tracks momentum and trend direction using exponential moving averages. When the MACD line crosses above the signal line, it generates a bullish signal suggesting upward momentum. When it crosses below, it generates a bearish signal indicating downward pressure. MACD is valuable for identifying trend changes and confirming momentum in both trending and ranging markets.

Bollinger Bands

Bollinger Bands consist of a middle moving average and upper/lower bands based on standard deviations. When price touches or exceeds the upper band, the stock may be overbought. When price touches or falls below the lower band, the stock may be oversold. Band width also indicates volatility, with narrow bands suggesting potential breakout conditions.

Fundamental Metrics for Stock Screening

P/E Ratio (Price-to-Earnings)

The P/E ratio measures valuation by dividing stock price by earnings per share. Lower P/E ratios may indicate undervalued stocks relative to their earnings, while higher P/E ratios suggest growth expectations or overvaluation. Compare P/E ratios within the same industry for meaningful analysis of relative value.

Market Capitalization

Market cap represents the total market value of a company's outstanding shares. Large-cap stocks (over $10 billion) tend to be more stable and established. Mid-cap stocks ($2-10 billion) offer balance between growth potential and stability. Small-cap stocks (under $2 billion) provide higher volatility and potentially greater growth opportunities.

Dividend Yield and ROE

Dividend yield expresses annual dividends as a percentage of stock price, helping income investors identify dividend-paying stocks. Return on Equity (ROE) measures profitability relative to shareholder equity, with higher ROE indicating efficient management. ROE above 15% is generally considered good, while above 20% is excellent.
